The confusion is understandable, because the industry uses one word — "format" — to describe two completely different things stacked on top of each other. The two things "format" really means
Here's the single insight that clears up all the confusion. A video file is made of two layers: a container and a codec.
The container is the box — the file extension you see, like .mp4 or .mov. It bundles the video stream, the audio stream, subtitles and metadata into one file and defines how they're organized. The codec is the method used to compress the video inside that box — like H.264 or VP9. A useful analogy: the container is the shipping box, the codec is how the contents were packed. The label on the box (the extension) tells you the box type, not necessarily how the contents were packed.
The containers: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI
- MP4 is the universal default. It plays virtually everywhere — every phone, browser, editor and platform — and it's what you should export to unless you have a specific reason not to. If you remember one format, remember this one.
- MOV is Apple's container, the native output of iPhones and Macs. It's excellent and high-quality, but slightly less universal than MP4 on non-Apple devices. It often holds the same H.264 video an MP4 would, just in a different box.
- WebM is the open, web-focused container built for browsers and streaming. It's efficient and royalty-free, which is why the web loves it — but it's less widely supported by editing software and some devices.
- MKV (Matroska) is the flexible power-user container. It can hold almost anything — multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters — which makes it great for archiving but poorly supported for direct upload to social platforms.
- AVI is the old-timer. It still works but is dated, inefficient, and best converted to MP4 for anything modern.
The codecs: H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1
Inside the container, the codec does the real work of squeezing your video down to a sensible size. The main ones:
- H.264 (AVC) is the reigning champion of compatibility. It's over two decades old, plays on absolutely everything, and offers a great balance of quality and size. When in doubt, H.264 inside an MP4 is the safest file you can make.
- H.265 (HEVC) is H.264's successor — it delivers similar quality at roughly half the size, which is fantastic for 4K. The catch is patchier support: some devices and browsers still can't play it, and it carries licensing complications.
- VP9 is Google's open codec, common in WebM and used heavily for web streaming. Efficient and royalty-free, but less supported in editing tools.
- AV1 is the newest open codec, more efficient than all of the above, and increasingly used by big streaming platforms. Support is still catching up on older hardware, but it's the future.
Which format should you use?
You can skip almost all the complexity with one default and a few exceptions:
- Default to MP4 (H.264). For uploading anywhere, sharing, or editing, this is the right answer nine times out of ten.
- Use MP4 (H.265) for 4K when you need a smaller file and you know your target devices support it.
- Use WebM when you're embedding video directly on a web page and want maximum efficiency in modern browsers.
- Use MKV for archiving when you want to keep multiple tracks and subtitles together, then convert to MP4 whenever you need to share it.
Why a video won't play — and the fix
When a file refuses to play or import, the usual culprit isn't the container — it's an unsupported codec inside, or an unusual combination the player doesn't understand. A MOV from a phone might use a codec your editor doesn't read; a downloaded MKV might hold audio your player can't decode.
